Job description

The mission of the New Development & Transformation Business Division is to innovate and develop technologies, products and digital solutions in the new areas in which Axens wishes to grow, in connection with the energy and ecological transition.

Within this Business Division, the Process & Equipment Innovation Department is in charge of new processes and equipment, from the development phases to the commercial launch. In this context, this department is managing the development projects with IFPEN or other R&D partners, the intellectual property and the optimization of the process.

Context :

Axens is developing in cooperation with Michelin and IFPEN a new technology for the production of bio-based butadiene from ethanol. A demonstration unit ("Expérimentateur Pré-Industriel" - EPI) located at Michelin's plant in Bassens, France is currently in operation.

With this project, Axens continues to position itself as a major provider of technologies in the field of bio based chemicals and aims at commercializing a performant technology for the production of sustainable butadiene.

To support this new development and its future commercialization, the NDT BD is looking for a Technology Development Engineer reporting hierarchically to the Technology Development Manager PetroChemicals.

The job is foreseen as a professional parcours, focused first to support the final phase of the development of the BioButterfly technology within the New Development & Transformation BD (duration : approximatively 18 months), before continuing into the commercialization of this technology within the Renewables Product Line /Technology & Technical Support Business Division.

The first part of the job involves working in a transversal project environment, with close contacts with Michelin, IFPEN and several entities within Axens, such as process design & start-up teams, catalyst industrialization teams and technologists in charge of the Biotech portfolio.


Missions :

Your main missions will be as follows:

  • Follow and supervise the operation activities, in contact with Axens' representative on site (SU adviser).
  • Critical scrutiny of the EPI performances; ensure the regular reporting of the activities to NDT and TTS project leaders
  • Contribution to Blank Process Data Book using feedbacks from the performance & operation of the EPI, support to the Process Team in charge of the Generic Process Data Book
  • Support to commercial activities in close cooperation with the Renewables Product Line : develop marketing support, Participate to pre-commercialization of the technologies
  • Management of external consultations as needed for specific items of the technology (equipment…)
  • Contribution to the development , implementation and maintenance of Connect'In tool for BioButterfly process follow-up
  • Under supervision of Renewables Product Line /Technology & Technical Support Business Division, create tools to be used to establish future Technical Proposal

Desired profile

Knowledge and Required Level :

  • Being fluent in English is required for this position
  • Engineer in Chemistry, Chemical Engineer or General Engineer (Master or PhD Degree) with good knowledge in petrochemistry, refining, and/or gas treatment, with an experience of 3 years minimum, either in process design and industrial operations.
  • Knowledge and critical look on R&D activities is a plus.
  • Being fluent in English is mandatory.
  • Finally, availability for short-duration overseas travels is required.

  • You are also expected to possess the skills necessary for critical thinking and problem solving, and a capacity to work under fast-paced environment
  • You have very good relational contacts as well as qualities to convince, and comfortable to work in team
  • You are available for short-term travelling, especially to EPI site close to Bordeaux, and to Lyon.
