Job description

·  Job facts

Are you ready for your next challenge?

Our mission is to create novel and highly differentiated medicines. As part of Roche's pharma research and early development unit (pRED), we are at the “birthplace” of novel therapeutic antibodies and next generation biologics, such as bispecific antibodies or fusion proteins. Our ambition is to deliver such molecules to patients with game changing clinical benefit. We have an international reputation for making next-generation biologics that are successful in the clinic, yet we are still humbled by the complexity and effort required for this rewarding endeavor.

To strengthen our team, we are looking for a Scientist Data Science & Drug Design (m/f/d) with a strong background in bioinformatics, data analysis, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and scientific programming - all with the focus of being applied in large molecule drug design.

The team in a nutshell:

We pride ourselves on being a diverse group of about 10 computational drug hunters. The team wasrecently formed and integrates the various in-silico expertises (structural biologists, sequence repertoire analysis and machine-learning experts) which are needed for successful design and engineering of novel protein-based medicines.

We are part of a thriving ecosystem comprising disease biologists, wetlab scientists and IT experts.

The job in a nutshell:

You will be faced with puzzling and unexpected problems about understanding the mode of action of our drugs. Then, it's up to you to solve those problems with ingenious simulations using ODEs, MC simulations and statistical models. For many of these tasks there are no off-the-shelf solutions, so you will develop, code and deploy computational methods and share them with your stakeholders.

As an enthusiast for Data Science and Drug Design in pRED's large molecule discovery organization, you will analyze and gain knowledge in antibody sequence repertoires, e.g. from B-cell or phage display campaigns using machine learning and AI techniques.

You will be part of several project teams with members at the various Roche sites, which rely on your expertise. This field of research is rapidly evolving, thus staying abreast of the latest developments and engaging into external collaborations is key to long-term success.

The Penzberg campus, located in the greater Munich area, is a campus of 6 000 employees with extraordinary possibilities for scientific exchange and personal development.

This is what we appreciate about our new colleague:

Team player: you enjoy working in a team where there are no single heroes and both successes as well as failures are accounted for by the whole team.

Innovator: you are willing to suggest and try new ideas by your own initiative. You take ownership and are able to engage people to work on something new and you take changes as an opportunity to grow.

Infinite learner: you never miss an update of your skill-set and you show a genuine curiosity to stay at the forefront of science.

Communicator: you are used to presenting your topics in English in a clear and convincing way to expert and non-expert audiences and to management boards.

And the technical requirements for this position?

·  Experience in conducting your own research in the field of bioinformatics, machine learning, scientific algorithm development or related fields, e.g. as a PostDoc.
·  PhD or equivalent university degree in bioinformatics or related subjects with a strong life-science background with a track record of relevant publications.
·  Solid programming skills in Python. Working knowledge in R, MatLab, or other programming languages. Knowledge in the field of protein design and engineering.
·  Experience using common deep learning frameworks (tensorflow, torch, keras) and a solid background in handling, aggregating and manipulating data is definitely a plus.

This is a 2-years temporary position.
