Job description
Carbon is IBM's open source design system for software and digital experiences. Carbon is guidance, governance, design tools and resources, and working code, for everyone at IBM.
We need a passionate, proactive, and experienced Visual Designer to help develop and deliver Carbon. You'll be a decisive, systematic thinker. Someone who can build relationships across the whole of IBM and coalesce those needs into systemic solutions. And you'll have the outstanding design sensibilities necessary to mentor and guide other designers at IBM.
This position requires strong design skills, an understanding of product delivery, and a focus on high-quality design. You should be interested in systems thinking, grids, Swiss typography, component design and UX pattern creation. You must have the ability to deal with ambiguity and be self-motivated. Our team depends on collaboration, rigorous exploration, and openness (our work is open source) and candidates should be practiced in sharing work in progress and giving and receiving critiques.
Candidates should be creative, detail oriented, curious, questioning, take the initiative, and be giving and receiving critique. You should be able to focus on design detail and ascertain user value and impact as part of your software experience. You possess experience solving complex design problems for Web interactions or software solutions and are capable of translating research findings into complex interaction designs that provide usable, effective and efficient experiences to users.
Your keen written and verbal communication skills include the ability to articulate alternative approaches. The ideal candidate has the demonstrated the ability to produce and enhance low-fidelity sketches and medium fidelity wireframes to facilitate communication of recommended solutions, as well as creating high-fidelity product ready designs. IBM builds products and solutions that change the world. The designers on Carbon will drive the user experience for all those solutions.
Job Responsibilities -
- Work with stakeholders across IBM, and the Carbon team, to build a comprehensive, evolving, design system at enterprise scale. - Help business units use Carbon to design and build what they need.
- Drive improvement in the design system itself, and in the processes we use to build it.
- Decide, define, and communicate a clear strategy to designers, the rest of the Carbon team, and IBM as a whole.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise
- Expert knowledge in designing software products and applications
- Expert knowledge of systems thinking
- Expert experience in solving complex user problems and user interface design.
- Expert skills in visual design principles including typography, layout, imagery, color, etc.
- Portfolio and work samples, including user-centered design skills including visualizations of complex experiences such as stories, flows, scenarios, personas, etc. (any fidelity), sketches to mid-fidelity interactions (show your process), clickable prototypes (any fidelity) and high-fidelity delivered product work.
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, Bohemian Sketch, and prototyping tools, such as Framer, Keynote, and/or Axure
- 4+ years of delivering product design.
