Master Thesis spring '20: decentralized analytics and machine learning
Kista, SWEDEN
Job description
Imagine a scenario where several parties each own a lot of valuable, and potentially confidential or otherwise sensitive, data that they can not share with the other parties, but where the parties are united around a strong common goal. Some potential examples could be:
· Banks fighting money laundering and other financial crimes
· Countries fighting terrorism
· Drug companies fighting major diseases, while still being competitors in the market
· Telecommunications companies contributing to R&D for next-gen technologies, while still being competitors in the market
Let's assume that in order to achieve the common goal, there is a need to conduct analytics and machine learning on all the relevant data that the parties collectively have available. Since the data cannot be shared between the parties, it is not possible to do this in a centralized fashion, it must be done in a decentralized model.
The objective of this Master's Thesis project is to research this decentralized analytics and machine learning scenario from different perspectives, e.g.
· Defining, and agreeing between the parties, an analytical framework to use for achieving the goal
· Sharing necessary information about data assets between the parties without revealing too much
· Defining and agreeing analytical model(s), e.g. machine learning models, between the parties without revealing too much
· Establishing a contract between the parties, covering all important aspects of the analytical cooperation
· Establishing mutual trust between the parties regarding, e.g., quality and completeness of source data, quality and performance of the analytical models, traceability of results back to source data and models used
· Combining the analytical results of all parties into a unified result (which could by itself require an elaborated approach)
· Auditing the entire set of interactions between the parties
· Data confidentiality throughout the scenario
IBM is primarily looking for two master program students to conduct this thesis project as a team. If you apply as a team, please cross-reference each other by name in the individual applications. You can also apply individually, in which case we might propose to team you up with another thesis student to conduct the project, or possibly to run the project with a single thesis student.
The exact scope of the thesis project will be agreed between the thesis students, the supervisors from their schools, and IBM. IBM can not guarantee that the master's thesis project outlined here will fulfil the schools' formal criteria for a master's thesis, that must be discussed and agreed between the thesis students and their supervisors from their schools.
From IBMs point-of-view, it would be interesting to see how current frontline technologies could be used in conjunction with each other to address the de-centralized analytics and machine learning scenario, e.g. technologies such as:
· Machine learning and artificial intelligence
· Blockchain
· Cloud computing
· Streaming analytics
· Etc.
The work should begin with scoping and planning the thesis project, followed by a literature survey where previous knowledge/work in the area is identified. We would appreciate if the thesis project is not purely theoretical, but also includes a fair amount of hands-on prototyping, simulations, etc. in order to validate the theoretical ideas, and to build one or more demonstrators.
The thesis and prototype should be in English.
The work will be performed in IBM's premises in Kista, Stockholm. Some remote work may be permitted, up to 40%. IBM will do its best to connect the students with IBM experts in the field. IBM will provide access to systems needed for prototyping.
The work can begin as soon as possible. The expected project duration is 5-6 months, after which the thesis students should be able to present their finalized thesis papers. Ideally, the project would run during the spring term of 2020 with an end date in May or June.
Please note that IBM Sweden has a policy of not paying salary to thesis students.
