CIFRE PhD in Aeroacoustics (CFD/CAA) (M/F)

Airbus Toulouse

Airbus is a global leader in aeronautics, space and related services. In 2017, it generated revenues of € 67 billion and employed a workforce of around 130,000. Airbus offers the most comprehensive range of passenger airliners from 100 to more than 600 seats. Airbus is also a European leader providing tanker, combat, transport and mission aircraft, as well as Europe’s number one space enterprise and the world’s second largest space business. In helicopters, Airbus provides the most efficient civil and military rotorcraft solutions worldwide.

Our people work with passion and determination to make the world a more connected, safer and smarter place. Taking pride in our work, we draw on each other's expertise and experience to achieve excellence. Our diversity and teamwork culture propel us to accomplish the extraordinary - on the ground, in the sky and in space.

Description of the job

A PhD Thesis opportunity in "Aeroacoustics (CFD/CAA) (M/F)" has arisen at Airbus Commercial Aircraft in Toulouse.

The successful applicant will join the team in the "Acoustics Methods" department.

Rotor shock noise is one of the main noise sources of today's aircraft engines in take-off and climb flight conditions. The control and reduction of this source is of high stake and require high fidelity simulation tools that includes all 3D geometric and flow effects as well as the modelling of the acoustic treatments incorporated in the walls of the engine intakes. Euler and Navier-Stokes solvers offer solutions to compute the non-linear propagation of the high amplitude pressure fluctuations of the rotor shocks in the intake. But the modelling of the acoustic liners in those solvers remains a research challenge, especially for their non-linear behaviour in presence of very high acoustic levels.

The objectives of the PhD work will be the validation and extension of the Time Domain Impedance Boundary Condition recently developed by F. Monthegetti, its implementation in a finite volume Navier-Stokes solver, and the application and validation of the method to the propagation of the rotor shock waves in aircraft engine intakes.
