Practice Nurse

Responsible to: The General Practitioners in the partnership

Under the supervision of: The Practice Manager and the General Practitioners

Main purpose of post: To provide quality nursing services to patients within the Practice.

·  Hours: hours negotiable

·  Salary: per annum, pro rata (increments depending on experience)

·  Holiday: 28 days pro rata

The practice nurse will work as part of the primary healthcare team providing Personal Medical Services to the patients of Practice.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

NB It is recognised that additional training will be required for some of the tasks listed. Applicants to the post are not expected to be proficient in all tasks listed.

·  Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs.

·  Cytology.

·  Wound management and implement wound care in line with current evidence based guidelines and long term management leg ulcers, includes treatment 4 layer compression.

·  Removal of Sutures.

·  New Patient Medicals/Urinalysis.

·  Take ECGs.

·  Asthma/Peak Flow Readings/Spirometry.

·  Perform venepuncture according to local guidelines.

·  Hypertension Management.

·  Perform ear syringing.

·  Routine childhood, adult and travel vaccinations, are administered under patient group directions.

·  Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by

another clinician.

·  Assisting GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings.

·  Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs.

·  Interest in Diabetes or Coronary Heart Disease and Contraception.

·  Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as

appropriate.

17.Running well person clinics and health promotion programmes by providing a holistic assessment and lifestyle advice on diet, smoking, alcohol intake and exercise.

18.Assessing problems presented opportunistically by patients, dealing with minor illness.

19.Able to recognize and manage anaphylaxis according to current UK guidelines.

20.Able to perform Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation according to current UK guidelines.

21.Ability to obtain and document informed consent (either verbal or written).

22.Ensure infection control guidelines are maintained.

23.Casualties, accidents and minor injuries.

·  A commitment to maintain a high professional standard of nursing care and keep up

to date with all aspects of nursing care relevant to the post.

measures are met and reported to appropriate doctor.

·  A commitment to the effective use of practice and national healthcare service resources.

·  An awareness of own limitations and experience.

·  To work only in accordance with the UKCC Code of Conduct and within the Scope of

Professional Practice.

·  To have a written professional development plan and to maintain an up to date

portfolio which meets the requirements of registration with the UKCC.

Person Specification

Essential

To be a registered nurse with a UKCC personal identification number.

Contribute to the assessment of service needs.

Assist patients to identify their health needs.

Ensure effective relationships and communications with the PHCT and other agencies.

Support the practice clinical governance agenda.

Identify changes to clinical practice that are required to implement evidence-based guidelines.

To be competent in nursing duties required for the post.

Able to demonstrate enthusiasm to developing nursing skills.

Good communication skills with both patients and colleagues.

Able to work as a team player.

Ability to self-motivate, organise and prioritise own workload.

A demonstrable commitment to professional development.

To be able to work 20 hours and cover holiday and sickness when necessary
