JOB DESCRIPTION:

Abbott Diabetes Care, the fastest growing division in Abbott, has a new opening for a Systems Engineer, Algorithm Development & Implementation. In this position you will be a key contributor to exciting R&D projects related to next generation product development for our FreeStyle Libre medical device.

We are looking for a candidate with strong system integration and technical skills, who will excel in a matrixed environment working with development engineers and software developers. This person should ideally be experienced in the process of translating algorithm development work into a cohesive product, with some understanding of numerical processes when implementing algorithms, and some experience with software development.  The candidate will utilize knowledge of numerical methods, mathematics, software architecture, and data analysis in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment.  Results are expected to drive product development and clinical insights.

What You'll Do:

This Systems Engineer, Algorithm Development & Implementation, will be responsible for participating in the development of new products.   Assists with finding solutions to product development problems of defined scope. Participates in system level design documentation and requirements specification. Provides specialized functions such as system level integration and development of algorithms, user interface development, and numerical process methodology.  Develops and follows specialized procedures in executing experiments, evaluation and documentation of results. Develops working relationships with cross functional groups and senior/executive management.

Participate in development of new products/systems. Participate in optimizing design processes. Integrate individual algorithm modules into cohesive system-level framework. Effectively liaise with R&D, systems engineering and software development to translate discovery concepts into production-level software. Participate in product definition, system architecture, requirements writing, requirements management, requirements analysis, risk analysis, hazard analysis, product test and evaluation, System V & V, and/or design control documentation. Develop and document concepts for mobile app user interfaces that execute underlying algorithm tasks while presenting results to users in an intuitive, easy to understand way. Collect, organize, analyze, and document test results. Participate in integration of analytical and performance related elements with software, hardware, and electronics system components.

Education and Experience You'll Bring:

Required:

Bachelors degree in an engineering or scientific discipline.  Masters degree or PhD ideal.  6 yrs product development experience in Engineering or physical science. Experience credit for advanced degrees beyond BS (2 years for Masters; 4 years for Doctorate). Strong knowledge of defined development process that is consistent with ISO, FDA design control standards or requirements. Knowledge of contemporary design control and risk management practices.  Able to effectively communicate and convey research discoveries into product development.  Some knowledge in mathematical modeling of dynamic systems, preferably biological systems and ideally in the area of glucose regulation.

Preferred Background:

Preferable to have working knowledge of diabetes disease state (both Type 1 and Type 2) as well as current methods of disease management.  Good familiarity with CAD tools such as Matlab or Python. Solid knowledge of general engineering/science principles and laboratory skills. Understanding of the electro-mechanical, software, mathematical, chemical or biochemical process operative in diagnostic systems and:

(1) Track record translating research discoveries into a product development pipeline

(2) Experience developing production-level software from both a code and architecture perspective

(3) Experience in medical device space; ideally within diabetes or metabolic disease
