JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Staff Bluetooth Low Energy Firmware engineer designs products and development tools in a fast-paced cross-functional design environment and stays current on new technologies and design practices. The primary role for this position is writing the low level embedded software interfacing with electronics. As part of this role, you will also coordinate technical discussions and problem solving for software projects and collaborate with the platform and system architects on the impacts of design decisions. This position provides technical leadership for firmware design and development for best in class implantable and external Neuromodulation devices, for the treatment of chronic pain and neurological disorders. This position directly supports Abbott's Neuromodulation business and requires all applicants to live in the Dallas/Texas area. The office is in Plano, Texas.

Abbott Neuromodulation develops advanced medical implants and accessories for the stimulus of the nervous system and sensing of biomarkers. We are on the forefront of implantable device miniaturization and data science for improved patient outcomes. Through advanced embedded sensing and external mobile device apps we create an ecosystem for developing quick advancements in the field of neuromodulation through modern data science and analysis in a closed loop system.

Major, On-Going Responsibilities:

  • Owns embedded firmware/system development from requirements through commercial launch
  • Recognized as the organization's leader in applying new technology.
  • Recognized as a technical leader of firmware development methods for safety critical, fault tolerant real-time software, and current embedded system technologies.
  • Detailed firmware designs for low power, mixed signal embedded systems for implantable medical devices.
  • Troubleshoot BLE system issues, and incorporate lessons learned into next generation design.
  • Identifies the root cause of complex problems and solves them by determining the most appropriate procedure to implement
  • Demonstrates accountability for one's own decisions and articulate rationale without being defensive.
  • Effectively solicits and shares complex information within and across work teams, stating own point of view even when difficult or unpopular; listens effectively
  • Support the resolution of cybersecurity concerns in current BLE communication system.
  • Applies advanced engineering and scientific principles to architecture and embedded firmware designs to reduce design risk and optimize design features
  • Develops/utilizes models, characterization testing, analysis methods, and statistics to optimize designs
  • Interpret, understand and provide feedback on firmware requirements for a project. Perform requirement analysis to determine completeness and compliance with software system.
  • Pursues industry best practices and firmware technologies and their applications in medical devices, particularly in the Neuromodulation field, by monitoring industry events and literature. Keep up to date on Bluetooth Smart/Low Energy standard
  • This is a non-supervisory role

Your experience(s), education and knowledge will further expand Abbott's marketplace success:

  • Bachelor's degree plus in science or related field with 10+ years of related work experience with a complete understanding of specified functional area, master's degree with 5-9+ years of related work experience with a complete understanding of specified functional area, Ph.D. with 4-7+ years of related work experience with a complete understanding of specified functional area years post-graduate and/or industry experience preferred.
  • High level hands-on development and troubleshooting on embedded devices and Bluetooth peripherals.
  • Experience in low power, mixed signal-embedded systems development, in a highly regulated development environment such as FDA
  • Extensive experience planning project deliveries, milestones, and schedules and leading sub-teams in the delivery of firmware tasks
  • Advanced characterization testing, root cause analysis and utilization of benchtop measurement equipment and test setups
  • Experience with design and implementation of BLE designs data transfer best practices
  • Experience implementing BLE 4.2 attribute protocol and familiar with Apple and Google BLE stacks
  • Experience developing central and peripheral BLE applications
  • Experience developing firmware utilizing Agile principals and best practices
  • Extensive knowledge of statistics & data analysis
  • Experience with ARM uVision toolchain and Cortex-M processor family
  • Hands on experience with Bluetooth LE protocol analyzer equipment
  • This job requires good written and verbal communication, interpersonal, facilitation, presentation, quantitative, analytical, organizational, follow-up skills, and the ability to meet deadlines on multiple projects as well as the ability to converse effectively with all levels of employees.
  • A demonstrated ability to understand and comply with applicable FDA regulations and Company operating procedures, processes, policies, and tasks is also required.
  • Must be able to handle multiple assignments.
  • Must be able to perform in a diverse cross-functional and cross geologically located team environment

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in computer engineering or related field
  • Experience with digital signal processing, data analysis and/or machine learning
  • Experience with software development for medical devices and IEC 62304 compliance
  • Working knowledge of TI and/or Nordic Bluetooth Low Energy hardware/stack
  • Familiarity with the challenges and implementation of BLE Security
  • Four or more complex engineering projects from concept to production release would be desirable.
  • Specialized in wireless communication software development for mobile devices, and/or development experience for implantable medical devices.
