JOB DESCRIPTION:

Summary:

This position in Abbott Diagnostic Division would be responsible for human factors support that would influence the design and evaluation of next generation and on-market product lines. Responsibilities will cover, but not limited to, the design of hardware and software, and labeling, for medical products including devices, support systems and associated training/instructional elements. In addition, this candidate will develop and execute Human Factors protocols and develops summary reports in accordance with governing procedures.  The main objective of these activities is to produce safe, reliable, easy-to-use/intuitive, and easy-to-maintain medical products in furthering the Abbott goals of developing products that are compelling for our customers.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Provide human factors support to R&D teams for product development
  • Participate in teams to design and develop user interfaces (hardware, software, labeling, instructions and training)
  • Participate in teams to develop user requirements
  • Lead Use Error Analysis activities as part of use-related risk analysis and mitigation efforts
  • Conduct product evaluations, brainstorming sessions, competitive analysis, and other usability engineering methodologies with both internal teams and external vendors
  • Design, plan, execute and document simulated-use tests, field studies, focus groups, contextual inquiry studies, survey and questionnaire creation, and other human factors evaluation methods
  • Design, plan, execute and document Human Factors Design Validation per the FDA and international regulatory bodies

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Factors/Usability/Ergonomics/User Experience, Industrial Engineering, Cognitive Psychology, Computer Science or related STEM degree
  • Minimum 5 -7 years general human factors engineering or design experience
  • General knowledge of user interface design, human perception, cognition, anthropometry, biomechanics, human behavior, and physiology
  • Experience in usability and testing methodology, use scenario development, contextual inquiry, conducting usability evaluations, and questionnaire/survey development
  • Ability to work autonomously or in a team setting with high-level direction
  • Excellent collaboration and organization skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Human Factors/Usability/Ergonomics/User Experience, Industrial Engineering, Cognitive Psychology, Computer Science or related STEM field with at least 3-5 years of relevant work experience in human factors engineering or design
  • Preference for at least 3 years human factors or design experience in the medical field
  • Experience designing solutions to usability issues
  • Understanding of risk and use error analysis
  • Understanding of contemporary requirements elicitation, analysis, specification, verification, and management practices and the ability to apply them in practice
  • Familiarization with medical product design regulations, regulatory guidance and standards
